The Artist
I am a Chicago-area abstract artist creating contemporary paintings influenced by a sense of place and by the ways we come to understand ourselves.
My background in graphic design continues to influence how I approach painting. I begin with a sense of structure and balance, but the work develops intuitively through layers of color, expressive marks, and areas that are allowed to remain more restrained. I build, alter, cover, and reveal as the painting develops, allowing each decision to inform the next.
I am drawn to the contrast of expressive mark-making and more subtle passages of color. The marks can feel like the bold, messy leaps we take as we move forward, while the more restrained areas create a place for contemplation. I want the details to reward a closer look without determining what the viewer should see.
While my paintings begin with my own ideas and instincts, I intentionally leave room for personal interpretation. I'm interested in creating work that gives the viewer time to look, reflect, and discover a connection of their own.
I hold a BFA in Art and spent much of my career working in graphic design in Southern California and Chicago. I now work from my studio in the Chicago area and am also co-owner of Den10 Studio, a family-run gallery and working studio in La Grange, Illinois.
My current work continues to explore the relationship between our surroundings, the ways we see ourselves, and what feels genuinely our own.
